Drought Events over the Amazon River Basin (1993–2019) as Detected by the Climate-Driven Total Water Storage Change

چکیده

The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission has measured total water storage change (TWSC) interpreted drought patterns in an unparalleled way since 2002. Nevertheless, there are few sources that can be used to understand prior the GRACE era. In this study, we extended gridded TWSC 1993 by combining principal component analysis (PCA), least square (LS) fitting, multiple linear regression (MLR) methods using climate variables as input drivers. We (climate-driven) interpret (1993–2019) over Amazon basin. Results showed that, area with resolution of 0.5°, GRACE, follow on, Swarm had correlation coefficients 0.95, 0.92, 0.77 compared climate-driven TWSCS, respectively. assessed were consistent those Palmer Drought Severity Index TWSC. also found 1998 2016 events Amazon, both induced strong El Niño events, similar patterns. This study provides a new perspective for interpreting long-term period.

2005 drought event in the Amazon River basin as measured by GRACE and estimated by climate models

[1] Satellite gravity measurements from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) provide new quantitative measures of the 2005 extreme drought event in the Amazon river basin, regarded as the worst in over a century. GRACE measures a significant decrease in terrestrial water storage (TWS) in the central Amazon basin in the summer of 2005, relative to the average of the 5 other summer...

Projecting future climate change effects on the extreme hydrological drought events in the Weihe River basin, China

In this study, a framework to project the potential future climate change impacts on extreme hydrological drought events in the Weihe River basin in North China is presented. This framework includes a largescale hydrological model driven by climate outputs from a regional climate model for historical streamflow simulations and future streamflow projections, and models for univariate drought ass...

Evolutionary trends of drought under climate change in the Heihe River basin, Northwest China

The present paper focused on the analysis of drought in the Heihe River basin based on daily precipitation data observed at 13 weather stations covered from 1961 to 2010. The spatial and temporal variation of drought was estimated by means of the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), linear regression analysis and inverse distance weighted analysis. The SPI series on 1-month, 3-month, 6-month...

Drought Analysis of the Haihe River Basin Based on GRACE Terrestrial Water Storage

The Haihe river basin (HRB) in the North China has been experiencing prolonged, severe droughts in recent years that are accompanied by precipitation deficits and vegetation wilting. This paper analyzed the water deficits related to spatiotemporal variability of three variables of the gravity recovery and climate experiment (GRACE) derived terrestrial water storage (TWS) data, precipitation, an...

Moisture Transport Anomalies over the Danube River Basin during Two Drought Events: A Lagrangian Analysis

In this paper, we provide a Lagrangian analysis of the anomalies in the moisture transport during two important drought events (1989/1990 and 2003) configured over the Danube River Basin (DRB) region. Firstly, we identified the drought episodes that occurred over the DRB in the period of 1980–2014 through the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). SPEI was calculated using ...
